Don't Crease the Piece of the Week

9:19 AM

Detective Comics # 856
Writer: Greg Rucka
Artist: J. H. Williams III
Detective Comics has not been on my pull list of late. I thought it was pretty slow in terms of book volume last week. So I was just flipping through books and I ran across the cover art for this issue. More often than not, I try not to judge a book by its cover. Expectations of the content inside of the book tend to slap you across the face like a back-handed hand slap from a pimp to his 2-bit employee. In this case the fantastic cover matches the writing & artwork inside.
Greg Rucka (Whiteout/comic & movie out now) has a history of writing strong female protagonists. He continues this trend with Batwoman, as well with with The Question (Renee Montoya). Though they are typical crime-fighting heros in their own right, he does not sway away from Kate's sexuality or Renee's ethnicity - both atypical traits in the world of comics. The fairytale villain, Alice, is as insane & lethal antagonist for Miss Kane.
What can I say about J. H. Williams da' 3rd's artwork. It's amazing. He captures the writing perfectly with his creative paneling, details, and use of colors in certain scenes.
The Second Feature, starring The Question, is also a good story.

Damn you Rucka & Williams cube, another one on my weekly pull list.
