Back to the Future Cover O' the Day- The Infinity Gauntlet

10:39 AM

The Infinity Gauntlet #1
Marvel Comics, July 1991
Writer: Jim Starlin     Artist: George Perez

With the close of another lovely Summer also marks the end of those epic comic events that crossover between many of your fave books and others (by design to expose you to more & get you hooked in).  Back in my Sophomore year of High School I was bruising through the pages of an intergalactic war brought to us by the cosmic wizardry of Jim Starlin and the illustrate-extraordinaire of George Perez.

The killer cover places the tyrant of Titan, Thanos -- wielding the all-powerful Infinity Gauntlet-- at the center of many familiar faces, along with some not so recognizable.  The art is Perez at his best honing some inner Steranko-like paneling that slices up the prominent characters of the event with the Infinity Gems.

What I so loved about this cover and just about every other IG cover was that each one actually had significant connection to what was happening in the book.  A rarity to see that seemingly logical aspect in books of today.  After re-reading the Infinity Gauntlet this weekend, the event sadly didn't measure up to how I remembered it.

Fun Fact:  The living legend George Perez is returning to a regular desk job for The New 52 as the writer/cover artist/breakdowns along with Jesus Merino in Superman #1.
