Goin Local- Hana Hou!

6:44 AM

Extreme conditions arrived Tuesday on Hawaii’s North Shore for the first time in five years. Congratulations to Greg Long who took first place at the "Eddie", The Quicksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau surf contest which is held only when waves top 40 ft at Waimea Bay. Thousands
gathered to watch the worlds top big waves surfers tame the mountains of North Shore.

The event is held in memory of Aikau, a legendary Hawaiian surfer and Waimea Bay lifeguard who died in 1978 while paddling 19 miles to Lanai Island after the Hawaiian voyaging canoe he was on capsized. His crew was eventually rescued but his body was never found. Eddie was 31.
