Character Issues - "Wait for the Cream."

2:52 PM

This is my 1st entry of my Character of the Month. This month it goes to -

Col. Hans Landa
Portrayed by Christoph Waltz
Inglourious Basterds, Written & Directed by Quentin Tarantino

I wholeheartedly agree with Tim-Chi's review of the Inglourious Basterds. I'm a fan of Quentin Tarantino's work - sharp dialogue, abstract cinematography, timely soundtrack selections, & engaging characters. Col. Hans Landa is no doubt one of Tarantino's best.

The clear-cut antagonist of this film (duh, he's a Nazi), Col. Hans Landa is an evil gentleman of the Third Reich. He kills you with his charm (figuratively & literally). He makes his prey sweat and cringe through his chatty giddiness, sincere flattery and hypnotic intelligence. Though this "Jew Hunter" is good what he does, much of this is achieved through his linguistic mastery - he has an effortless, poetic flow when he speaks English, German, French, & Italian.

Christoph Waltz, who shines over Brad Pitt, portrays this polite villain to perfection. He's like a cross between Joker and Lex Luthor.

Yes, Inglorious Basterds is a definite must-see movie. The unforgettable Col. Hans Landa is much of the reason why its well worth the price of admission.
